Columbia University A Student Perspective The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Gabriella specializes in algebra tutoring, geometry tutoring, trigonometry tutoring, and a number of other areas. She is currently a junior at Columbia University majoring in biomedical engineering. See what she had to share about Columbia University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Gabriella: Columbia University is in uptown Manhattan in the Morningside Heights district. The undergraduate campus is fairly small, but very welcoming. Although it is in a very urban environment, Columbia University is gated, and there are a lot of public safety officers to create a very safe environment. Transportation is very easy. There is a subway stop, and there are bus stops right outside the gates. Columbia University also has a bike rental center right outside of the student life building. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Columbia University? Gabriella: Professors and teaching assistants all have scheduled office hours that are posted on the course page. If office hours do not work for a student, professors and teaching assistants respond quickly to emails, and they are usually open to scheduling appointments. Academic advisers also have scheduled walk-in hours but, again, if those hours do not work, students can always schedule appointments or email their advisers with their questions. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Gabriella: All undergraduate students are guaranteed housing for all four years. All rooms are either singles or doubles. Most of the dorms are currently being renovated or have been renovated in the past few years. There are a variety of dining plans that a student can choose from. They consist of dining hall swipes, dining dollars to use at cafes around campus, and flex dollars, which can be used at select restaurants and grocery stores near campus. There are three main dining halls which are all buffet-style. The other food options on campus are pay-per-item. Columbia University is located in-between the Upper West Side and Harlem. It is walking distance to Central Park, and if you want to go further, the subway is right off campus. There are so many opportunities to get involved on campus. There are hundreds of clubs ranging from cultural to academic to service. There is also Greek life, intramural sports, and D1 varsity sports. All the sources to socialize are out thereone just has to take initiative and get involved. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Gabriella: Columbia University is split into three different colleges. There is Columbia College, which is known for its humanities programs. There is the School of Engineering and Applied Science, which focuses on engineering and science. The last college is the College of General Studies, which is for undergraduate students who are completing college at an untraditional time. So depending on what major or program you are looking for, Columbia University is sure to have it. I am currently majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a pre-medical track. I chose to pursue this because I want to be involved in the medical field. I have gone through quite a lot of medical procedures as an athlete. I aspire to help others in the same way my doctors helped me. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Gabriella: I came to Columbia University already a member of the varsity diving team, so I automatically had a friend group to hang out with. Aside from teammates, I became great friends with the people I lived with, and with people from the clubs I am in. Greek life is present on campus, but it is not a big part of social life. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services at Columbia University? Gabriella: The career center is very helpful. I have gone to them to review my resume and to help with finding summer internships. They are very good at pointing you in the right direction and giving you helpful tips when dealing with employers. For career fairs, hundreds of reputable companies come to campus to recruit, some being Unilever and Johnson and Johnson. Although I personally have not used other student support services, the people who work at these places are very personable people, and they are always willing to help students with whatever they need. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Gabriella: There are so many libraries on campus that it is never hard to find a place in a library. Classrooms are also available to study in if there is not a class. The student union does not have a lot of places to study so you are not guaranteed a place. Studying in dorm lounges varies from dorm to dorm; some lounges have a lot of people studying, but others have no one. Describe the surrounding town. Gabriella: There is so much to do in Manhattan that you will probably not be able to finish everything you want to do in your four years at Columbia University. The staple places to visit for anyone visiting New York City are Times Square, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty. There are numerous places to eat at, visit, and shop at that I cannot even begin listing them. Downtown is where most of the hustle and bustle is. There is still a lot to do near campus, but it is definitely quieter near campus, which is good for an academic environment. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes at Columbia University? Gabriella: The undergraduate student body is quite small with a little over 6,000 students. I am very pleased with class sizes. I have classes that are big lectures with over 100 students, and I also have small discussion classes that are a maximum of 24 students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Gabriella: The most memorable experience thus far has been in my electrical engineering class. Growing up, I never had the desire to take apart or build electronics, but while in the lab portion of the class, I found not only that I liked building circuits, but also that I was pretty good at it. You missed the bus this morning and got to work late, your lunch buddy canceled on you so you ended up eating a tiny sandwich from the deli alone, your boss keeps piling more and more work on you and your pants are starting to feel a little tight. To top it off, you think you see a zit beginning to develop on your forehead. Then you go to bed, wake up, and this series of events repeats itself (with a little variation, of course). All you need to fix these problems is a little self-care. Thatâs where we come in weâve got a simple self-care guide that even the laziest of people will be able to follow. Read on to find out more! Tip #1: Exercise No one is stranger to the positive effects of exercise lowering risk of diabetes, heart disease, etc., as well as improving mood by releasing endorphins but while everyone is quick to tell you why you should exercise, you rarely get advice on how to actually begin exercising (and how to stick to it!). Going to a gym may be daunting if youâre not very fit (especially if youâre shy too) as being surrounded by a bunch of muscle maniacs is rather intimidating. But you donât have to go to a gym, you can work in exercise right into your busy schedule! Walk instead of taking the bus or a cab. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Try going to bed 10 minutes earlier each night. Itâs perfectly alright if you canât fall asleep the second your head hits the pillow. Simply lying there with your eyes closed will help your brain and body rest too. Tip #4: Meditate Reduce your stress and anxiety by meditating at least once a day. All you need to do is find a quiet spot with minimal stimulation (no loud noises or bright lights), close your eyes, and let your mind go blank. It helps if you can play soothing music too. You donât have to meditate for a long time 5 minutes a day is enough. Tip #5: Eat more fruits and veggies! What you eat doesnât just affect your health, it also affects your mood. If you eat healthy, youâll feel good, both physically and mentally. Fruits and veggies are loaded with vitamins and minerals that will boost your body and mind, so try to incorporate them into your diet. The next time you feel a craving for candy, munch on an apple or a carrot instead. Tip #6: Get some sun Spend 10-15 minutes out in the sun each day to soak up that vitamin D. You should aim to be out in the sunlight before 10 AM, as this is when the sunâs rays are the most beneficial. Read a book in the park or go for a walk youâll feel much healthier and happier afterward. Tip #7: Rest up Sleep isnât enough rest; you need to take short breaks from work (and life) during the day too! Otherwise, you run the risk of getting overwhelmed with all the work you have in front of you. The PSAT is over â" now what Parents of high school juniors, you may be wondering what your student should be doing to prepare for the SAT now that the PSAT is over (or almost over, if your student is taking the test on Saturday). PSAT scores donât come out until December, so many students put off further test preparation until after winter break. However, it can be academically beneficial and stress-reducing to get a head start on test preparation for spring!Students can use the time between now and when PSAT scores come back in December to take a practice SAT and ACT and see how they do on each test. Colleges accept either the SAT or ACT for admission. Tips for Teens Changing your Study Mindset Youve got a big test coming up at the end of the week, and youre dreading it. You know you should start studying now so that youll be well prepared, but whenever you think about studying your mind gets flooded with negative thoughts: Theres so much material to study for this test, where will I even start? What if I cant find my notes? What if my notes arent good enough and they dont make any sense to me now? What if I put all of this time into studying and then fail the test anyway? All of these thoughts can quickly send you into avoidance mode. Before you know it, its the evening before the test and you havent studied at all. Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all dependent on each other. If we want to change the way we behave or act, and the way we feel about the things that we have to do, then we can start by changing the way that we think. So, if you want to develop study habits that will allow you to put your best foot forward, then challenge the negative thoughts that might be getting in your way. There are common negative thought patterns that everyone experiences sometimes. These thoughts are more likely to come up when were faced with something that makes us nervous, stressed, or overwhelmed like studying for a big exam! All or Nothing Thoughts. With these types of thoughts, youre either great at something or terrible at something. You need to do things perfectly, or not at all. When it comes to studying, this kind of thinking can cause you to set an impossibly high standard for yourself. If you think that you need to study perfectly and get a top score on the exam, then youll quickly become overwhelmed and anxious when you think about all of the work you need to do. On top of that, the possibility of failure seems very high since anything less than a perfect grade will be a disappointment. All or Nothing Reframe: Remind yourself that you wont get a top score on every test, and that is okay. No single test is going to make or break your final grade. If you study and prepare for the test then youll have worked hard in order to do your personal best. Turning Small Problems into Catastrophes (Catastrophizing). When people catastrophize they take one small incident and allow it to grow larger and larger in their mind until its been built up to be a complete disaster. For example, if you get one bad grade on a math quiz, you think that this just proves that youre terrible at math. Youll probably fail every quiz and test for the rest of this year. This will show up on your college applications and now there is no way youll ever get into your first-choice school! Catastrophizing Reframe: Remind yourself that this is just one small problem, and that you dont know what it means for the future. Youre not a fortune teller! Try to put the problem out of your mind. Learn from any mistakes that were made, and start fresh today. Should Thoughts. When you have a long list of rigid rules about things you should do in order to study effectively, you set yourself up for guilt and regret when youre not able to follow through. This is especially true when youre lists of shoulds is impossibly long, impossibly challenging, or simply not a good fit for your personality or study style. So, if you thought that you should have started studying on Monday, but you didnt start until Thursday, then youll feel very guilty and defeated before you even sit down to study. Should Reframe: Try not to think about what you should have done and instead think about where you are at right now. Make a plan based on the amount of time that you have available and do your best right now. Then, when youre getting ready to study for another test in the future, think about the lists of rigid shoulds that you have in your mind. Ask yourself: Are they are realistic? Are they a good fit for you? Are they helping you move forward or just making you feel guilty and holding you back? Talk to a teacher or tutor about finding new strategies that will work for you. Challenging these three common negative thought patterns will go a long way in helping you change your study mindset. Youll feel less stressed when its time to start studying, and youll tackle your study plan more effectively. School performance 2011 - The truth! Last week, the Department for Education published data on more than 3,300 secondary schools' GCSE and A-Level exam results. Now parents have more information than ever about how their child's school is performing, this is an increase of data of 400 per cent than in 2010. Performance tables for 2011 now include: level of performance of disadvantaged children. if pupils with high, middle and low achieving results continue to make progress. how many pupils entered into the core academic subjects that make up the EBacc. Sadly, the 2011 GCSE results reveal that hundreds of secondary schools are failing to help pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve their full potential. Children on free school meals or in local authority care are approximately half as likely to achieve the national benchmark of five A* -C grade GCSEs including English and maths compared to their peers. Nationally, only one in 25 disadvantaged pupils managed to secure good grades in a combination of English, maths, languages, history or geography, and two sciences. This compares to the national average of nearly one in six. For the first time, the tables highlight how pupils have progressed since they left primary school. This year's statistics show that thousands of previously high achieving pupils are being failed by their secondary school: 8.600 pupils, 4.9 per cent, who were excelling at the end of primary school, then failed to gain five A* -C grade including English and maths. 45.6 per cent of pupils, some 120,000, who were at Level 4 at Key Stage 2 failed to make the expected amount of progress, to five A*-C grades including English and maths, at secondary school. There are now 107 secondary schools below the national minimum standard. A secondary school is below the floor standard if: fewer than 35 per cent of pupils achieve the basics standard of five A* to C grade GCSEs including English and maths. fewer pupils make good progress in English between KS2 and KS4 than the national average. fewer pupils make good progress in maths between KS2 and KS4 than the national average.
